Spending a morning at the Walton Food Bank offers a clear picture of what it means to show up for a community. Operated by The Arc of Delaware County NY, and located at the United Presbyterian Church (known locally as “the red brick church”), the Walton Food Bank serves individuals and families throughout the area by providing access to food in a way that is respectful and dependable. Each Tuesday from 11am-1pm, volunteers from The Arc of Delaware County come together with the same focus: meeting people where they are and offering support that preserves dignity.

A Shared Purpose
There is a rhythm to the day that reflects this mindset. Everyone has a role, and every role matters.
Fred begins the morning assembling food bags, carefully following guidelines to ensure each household receives a balanced selection of items. Andy manages inventory and registers community members as they arrive. Sammy assists with sourcing meat, preparing bags, and occasionally helps people bring their items to their vehicles. Kevin interacts with individuals as he helps to distribute food. Mike focuses on keeping the space clean, organized, and running smoothly while helping manage donations and general upkeep.

Every team member is essential to the success of the food bank and reflects the trust placed in them by the community.

As Mike puts it, “There is no hierarchy, we are all volunteers.” That belief is reflected in the way individuals with and without disabilities work side by side, each contributing in meaningful and impactful ways.

Responding When the Community Needed It Most
That sense of care becomes even more visible during times of increased need.
During the government shutdown, the Walton Food Bank recognized that many families were facing unexpected challenges. To help meet that need, the food bank temporarily expanded its hours and opened two days a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During that time, many grateful community members came through the doors, some seeking help for the first time. Each person was met with patience, understanding, and compassion.
Making the Holidays Accessible
Another meaningful moment came during the Thanksgiving season. The Walton Food Bank was able to provide 105 families with a full Thanksgiving meal, complete with a turkey and all the traditional fixings.
Families left knowing they would be able to gather around a holiday meal together. It was a powerful reminder that access to food also means access to comfort, tradition, and connection.
Care Behind the Scenes
Behind the scenes, care continues in quieter though equally impactful ways.
The community generously provides monetary and food donations to keep the shelves stocked. Food donations are carefully inspected for quality and expiration dates. Inventory is tracked, and food safety procedures are followed closely.
This attention to detail reflects respect for the people being served and reinforces the importance of doing the work well and responsibly.
What Community Care Looks Like
Community care at the Walton Food Bank reflects an inclusive approach where everyone has a role, every contribution matters, and support is offered in ways that meet people where they are.
