A Visit to Celebrate Inclusion
In the month of October, members of The Arc of Delaware County’s Self-Advocacy group took a meaningful trip to Carousel Children’s Services (CCS) to observe inclusivity in action. Chris, Self-Advocacy President; PJ, Vice President; and Sarah, Secretary, had the opportunity to see firsthand the integration between DC4 and CCS.
Learning and Growing Together
Carousel Children’s Services provides an inclusive learning environment for children ages 3 to 5. Each classroom welcomes about 15 students and is supported by both CCS and DC4 staff who work side by side to ensure every child receives the care and attention they need. This collaboration creates a setting where all kiddos—regardless of ability—have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive together. Every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to reach their full potential.
Circle Time and the Letter “E”
During their visit, the self-advocates joined the classroom for circle time — a lively and engaging experience where the children learned each other’s names, sang songs together, and practiced the letter of the day: “E.” The room was filled with excitement as the children colored elephants to reinforce their new letter lesson.
Reflecting on the experience, Self-Advocacy President Chris shared, “It was the highlight of my day getting to have direct involvement in their education lesson, the circle time. It was very eye-opening.”
Inclusion in Action
What stood out most during the visit was the spirit of inclusion and connection. By integrating children who have intellectual and developmental disabilities with those who do not, CCS nurtures empathy, understanding, and acceptance from an early age. The children learn not only academics but also kindness — celebrating differences and supporting one another in meaningful ways.
Small Moments, Big Impact
Several DC4 kiddos were observed showing empathy and lending a helping hand to their CCS peers during activities. These moments of teamwork and compassion highlight the power of inclusion — helping all children develop confidence, social skills, and a deep sense of belonging.
Building a More Inclusive Future
The visit was a beautiful reminder of the impact inclusive education has on everyone involved. Together, CCS and DC4 are creating classrooms where learning, laughter, and love go hand in hand.
