Awakening the Heart of Person-Centered Supports: A Two-Day Workshop in Albany

Earlier this month, a dynamic group of professionals, advocates, and leaders from The Arc of Delaware County and across NYS gathered in Albany, NY for a transformative two-day experience as part of the Alliance-sponsored Learning Institute, “Awakening the Heart of Person-Centered Supports.” This gathering created space not only for learning but for awakening—an invitation to slow down and reconnect with the core values of human connection and intentional presence.

Building Meaningful Relationships

Throughout the workshop, participants explored what it truly means to create meaningful relationships. Far beyond professional networking or surface-level interactions, these conversations asked us to reflect on the kind of relationships that are built on trust, authenticity, and mutual respect. We examined how being present, consistent, and vulnerable with one another lays the foundation for the person-centered work we aim to do.

A phrase that resonated throughout the two days was, “It is the relationship that makes the harmony.” This powerful reminder speaks to the idea that when we prioritize authentic connection, everything else begins to fall into place—collaboration, support, and even systems change. Without relationship, our efforts risk becoming mechanical. With relationship, they become human.

Listening with the Whole Body

Another central theme of the institute was the concept of listening—not just with our ears, but with our whole body. This means engaging all of our senses, being fully present, and tuning in to the emotions, needs, and unspoken messages that often lie just beneath the surface. It’s about digging deeper—beyond words and assumptions—and truly hearing someone for who they are and what they’re trying to express.

We also reflected on how to support others in doing this deeper work. In our roles, we have the opportunity—and responsibility—to help the people we support go beneath the surface and explore what they are truly longing for. This requires trust, patience, and the willingness to sit with complexity. When people feel safe enough to share their real hopes, fears, and dreams, we can begin to build supports that honor who they truly are.

Taking the Time to Reflect

In a world that rewards speed and productivity, this workshop offered a rare and needed invitation to pause. Taking time to reflect allows us to respond rather than react, to connect rather than control. Whether in our personal or professional lives, stepping back to consider how we show up for others—and how we receive them—can be transformative.

Tammy Green commented “What I took away from the training was just how important making relationships is, really connecting to people and listening to what people are truly saying.”

Lanora Steinbacher stated “I love inclusion and diversity. This workshop taught us how to accept people for who they are. There were a lot of inspiring people there.” She also included “I want to bring a positive energy to relationships. If I can be a beacon of light, you can too!”

Vinny Heller added “I am very grateful that I had the opportunity to attend this Learning Institute.  A quote that was shared with us that resonates with me is “It’s the relationship that makes the Harmony”. This Learning Institute inspired us to dig deeper about individuals specific and unique longings. This requires understanding not only the deeply personal wants/needs and aspirations of others, but also acknowledging the intentions, values, and capacities of those providing support, while fostering a mutual and empathetic connection. Throughout this process, we learned to pause, actively listen (not just with our ears but with our whole body) and self-reflect by asking ourselves what it is that we can bring to person-centered relationships.”

Moving Forward

As the workshop came to a close, the energy in the room was calm yet vibrant-rooted in the shared understanding that person-centered work begins with how we treat one another. We left with new tools, deeper awareness, and a collective commitment to being more present, more curious, and more open.

We extend our deepest thanks to the Alliance and the team behind “Awakening the Heart of Person-Centered Supports” for creating such a rich and grounding experience. The conversations and connections sparked in Albany will continue to ripple outward—through our work, our relationships, and our communities.
