Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month Spotlight- Zen Petersen

Meet Zen, a Delhi resident whose name matches his personality. He is a great asset to this community and is living a life that helps contribute to a more inclusive society.

He works for the Office for the Aging as their Community Outreach Specialist. As part of his role, he distributes information packets for the Office for the Aging to the Walton, Delhi and Hamden communities.
This past summer, Zen was asked to speak at The Arc NY’s Board of Governors virtual meeting. He gave a speech about what self-advocacy means to him and shared a bit about himself and his leadership roles in the community. In addition to his role at Office for Aging, Zen is serving his first term on Delarc’s Board of Directors. He’s a valued member of the board and brings a unique perspective only a self-advocate can bring.
Zen enjoys being a part of the festivities and events in his community. A couple of his favorites are the First Friday events that take place in Delhi every Friday evening in July, as well as the Delaware County Fair.
When he is not out enjoying his community, volunteering or working, Zen spends time at his home with his roommate. Together they enjoy cooking, specifically pot roast and chili. Zen and his roommate like going shopping or just hanging out at home watching TV.
Zen truly is a valued and respected member of his community and enjoys being a part of an organization who advocates for people with developmental disabilities. It’s important for people with disabilities to be seen and respected.
What can you do show you value the opinions and perspectives of all people Together, let’s create a more inclusive society where all people are seen and respected for who they are.
